How to Meet With a Writing Support Tutor

Meet with a tutor

Face-to-face tutoring sessions are available whenever CTAS Writing Support is open and last 50 minutes.

There are three ways to meet with a Writing Support tutor:

  • Walk-in tutoring: The most popular option. No appointment necessary! Just visit us at L-113 during our operating hours, and we will match you with the next available tutor on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • One-time appointments: Call us at 718-631-6663 or stop by L-113, and reserve a tutor for a specific day and time (up to a week in advance).

  • Weekly appointments: Meet with the same tutor at the same time each week for the entire semester. To set up a weekly appointment, call us at 718-631-6663 or stop by L-113, or click here.

We also provide online feedback and assistance on paper drafts 24/7 through Tiger Write, our e-tutoring system!

How to get the most out of your CTAS Writing Support tutoring session

Face-to-face session tips

  • If you have an appointment, arrive on time.

  • Bring a copy of your assignment sheet or syllabus to help guide your tutoring session.

  • Bring your draft (if you have one) as a printout. If your work is on a flash drive, ask your tutor to bring a laptop to the table.

  • If you have any written feedback on your draft from your instructor, share it with your tutor.

  • Think about which aspects of your paper draft or assignment YOU believe are most important to improve first.

Tiger Write online tutoring session tips

  • In the "Assignment Content" box, type in as many specific assignment guidelines as you can from your syllabus or assignment sheet. This will help guide your tutor's feedback.

  • In the "About the Assignment" box, note the specific aspect(s) of your writing that you'd like the tutor to focus on.

  • Remember that it can take up to 48 hours to get a response, especially during busy times of the semester. Please submit your assignment draft at least three days before its due date, so you will have enough time to revise after you get our feedback.
