Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-supported academic success program designed to help students succeed in traditionally challenging courses at Queensborough Community College. SI offers structured, out-of-class study sessions led by trained SI Leaders students who have previously excelled in the course and understand its content, pace, and expectations.
Unlike tutoring, SI is directly linked to specific courses. SI Leaders attend class alongside enrolled students, take notes, and stay up to date with the material. They then host study sessions that are collaborative, engaging, and focused on reinforcing key concepts while helping students develop effective study strategies.
SI is free and open to all students enrolled in supported classes. Participation of students regularly attending SI sessions tend to improve their course performance and confidence.
SI sessions take place after the class times (50 min) each week or on separate day (100 min). Students can choose the session times that work best for their schedule.
Within the SI program, students will:
- Review course content through interactive group study
- Strengthen note-taking, test preparation, and time management skills
- Practice problem-solving in a supportive peer setting
- Gain a deeper understanding of difficult material
- Build confidence through collaboration with classmates and guidance from their SI Leader
The SI program is a great opportunity for students who want to reinforce classroom learning, connect with peers, and improve academic outcomes. It supports a deeper, more connected learning experience in some of the college’s most demanding courses.
